Yankees 16-1 to win World Series

The Yankees fell short of the playoffs in 2013, but oddsmakers believe they will contend, but not win it all, in 2014.

Bovada.lv released its odds for the 2014 World Series champion on Thursday, and the Yankees were pegged at 16-1 to win it all. Just six teams are ahead of them: the world-champion Red Sox, the runner-up Cardinals, and the Dodgers, Tigers, Nationals, and Angels.

The Yankees are tied with five other teams in seventh place: Atlanta, Cincinnati, Oakland, Tampa Bay, and Texas.

As for the Mets, they are looking at the prospect of another long season, as ace Matt Harvey will miss 2014 recovering from last month’s Tommy John surgery. Bovada.lv has the Mets at 75-1 to win the World Series, tied with Minnesota for third-worst. The only longer shots are Miami (200-1) and Houston (250-1).

Despite winning their third World Series in 10 seasons, the Red Sox are not the favorite to repeat. The Dodgers, who lost to the Cardinals in the National League Championship Series, lead the way at 7-1, followed by Detroit (9-1), Boston, St. Louis and Washington (10-1), and the Angels (14-1).

The Nationals have the lowest odds for a team that did not make the playoffs in 2013. On the flip side, the Pirates — who qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1992 — are a 25-1 shot.
