Yankees mum on bringing coaches back

BOSTON — All of the Yankees’ coaches contracts expire Thursday night at midnight and as of Wednesday, general manager Brian Cashman wasn’t ready to announce how many — or if all — would return.

“I wouldn’t say, once the deals are done we will put out a release,’’ Cashman said Wednesday. “I won’t say until it’s done.’’

Pitching coach Larry Rothschild has been expected to return for weeks and it is believed hitting coach Kevin Long will be back. Ditto bullpen coach Mike Harkey. Third-base coach Rob Thomson’s name has been linked to the Mariners’ managerial opening that will be addressed following the World Series. Bench coach Tony Pena and first-base coach Mick Kelleher must also be addressed.

At the conclusion of the season, after the Yankees began talking to manager Joe Girardi about a contract extension, Cashman indicated the coaches would be back.
