Jets report card: Following Rex’s lead

OFFENSE

Give offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg credit: He stuck with the running game. The Jets ran the ball 52 times for 177 yards, led by Chris Ivory (34 rushes for 104 yards). QB Geno Smith (17-of-33, 233 yards, 1 TD, 1 rushing TD, 1 INT) had the early pick-six, but settled down and had a nice game, including two huge plays with his legs. WR Jeremy Kerley (8 catches, 97 yards, 1 TD) was a monster on third downs, converting six.

DEFENSE

It looked ugly early and then the Jets picked it up just before halftime. It rolled into the second half when they had an interception for a touchdown and forced three punts in the third quarter. S Antonio Allen did a good job on Rob Gronkowski, even though the Patriots TE still had 114 receiving yards. Pats QB Tom Brady (22-of-46, 228 yards, 1 INT) looked uncomfortable for most of the second half and overtime when coach Rex Ryan brought pressure. The Jets sacked him four times.

SPECIAL TEAMS

All Nick Folk does is kick game-winners. The Jets kicker did it again, booting a 42-yard field goal in overtime to win the game. Folk now has three game-winners this season. Punter Ryan Quigley had an off day, with an average of 40.2 yards per punt. Return man Josh Cribbs had a few nice punt returns and showed some promise. The Jets allowed Julian Edelman to average 19.3 yards on three punt returns.

COACHING

Ryan exuded confidence all week and his team reflected that. The Jets are never intimidated by the Patriots and Ryan is the reason why. Defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman and Ryan made some nice defensive adjustments at halftime to get the defense going. Mornhinweg embraced the run, almost to a fault when the Jets at first settled for a 56-yard field goal attempt. But overall Mornhinweg called a nice game.
