TAKING THE FIFTH

DO too many Jimmy Choo boots, Hermes scarves and Chanel handbags turn you off your liquor?

Why not take a stroll over to the other Fifth Avenue – Park Slope’s getting-hipper-by-the-minute thoroughfare.

There are trees, with their seasonal explosion of fire and gold, lining the street. And bars a-plenty.

The Bar Belles’ pick of the crop is Great Lakes, a low-key asylum far from the madding Manhattan crowds, where high ceilings, exposed-brick walls and tatty couches favor comfort over pretension. Brooklyn boozehounds are drawn to its cheap drinks, laid-back vibe and the best indie-rock jukebox that side of the East River.

A Park Slope newbie? The Fall into Fifth festival makes this weekend a great time to visit. Local artists, designers, musicians and merchants are throwing an “open house party” along Fifth Avenue, from Flatbush Avenue to Ninth Street, with wine and cheese tastings, exhibitions, giveaways, poetry readings and live music.

Great Lakes, 284 Fifth Ave., at First Street, Brooklyn, (718) 499-3710.
