SHOCKEY: INJURIES WON’T HURT OFFENSE

Jeremy Shockey said the loss of running back Brandon Jacobs – and perhaps Eli Manning – can’t be an excuse to derail what he believes should still be a potent Giant offense.

“There is a definite sense of urgency,” the tight end said. “Everyone is working real hard this week and is real excited about playing. We’re as good as we want to be. I always say that we work hard and we got all the talent in this room to be a great offense.”

Manning (shoulder) and Jacobs (knee) aren’t the only hobbled Giants.

Wideout David Tyree (wrist) is out, while corner Kevin Dockery (ankle), defensive end Osi Umenyiora (knee) and kicker David Tynes (right calf) all missed practice yesterday, as they had Wednesday.

Safety Gibril Wilson’s participation was limited due to a quad injury, after not being on the injury list Wednesday. Linebacker Gerris Wilkenson (patella) practiced in a limited capacity for the second straight day, after missing the entire preseason.

But Tynes was held out purely for precautionary reasons, and should practice today.

“I could’ve kicked today [yesterday],” Tynes said. “They just didn’t want me to. … I did a lot of stuff without the ball [yesterday], like 40 field goals and 20 kickoff steps running full speed, cleats, no ball. It feels good. I’m going to play.”

Manning’s injury highlights the Cal Ripken-esque accomplishments of Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre, who will start his 239th straight regular-season game, not even including 20 playoff games. That streak dates back to Sept. 20, 1992.

“It’s an incredible feat, what he’s done,” said Manning, whose streak is a modest 40.

If Manning can’t go, Lorenzen would be the first lefty quarterback to start for the Giants since Jim Del Gaizo went 0-3 in 1974. Big Blue got outscored 80-17 by the Cowboys, Eagles and Redskins in his three starts.
