TENANTS FLEE WOBBLY BUILDING IN HARLEM

Dozens of people were evacuated last night from an unstable Harlem building with a history of violations, authorities said.

The Fire Department was called to the seven-story building at 305 W. 150th St. after receiving a complaint about unsafe conditions.

A Department of Buildings inspection revealed that floor braces were exposed in several apartments and there was excessive debris.

The building has been beset with problems. On Aug. 10, the DOB issued a permit allowing the owners to remove plumbing and several interior partitions.

Three weeks later, a resident filed a complaint, saying the owners were trying to do demolition work, despite the fact that 27 families still lived in the building.

The DOB said it never gave the owners a demolition permit, and issued a stop-work order because the work being done extended beyond what was allowed by the permit that was issued.

Several residents protested their removal from the building last night, saying they had no place to go.

But resident Jackelin Javier, 36, said it was “the best thing that could’ve happened,” after learning the Red Cross would put her family up.

“It could have been worse – the building could have collapsed,” she said.

The building owners could not be reached for comment.
