ST. ANTHONY’S MARCHES INTO ANOTHER FINAL

CHSFL PLAYOFFS

A 38-7 win in the semifinals is normally something to get pretty excited about. Not for St. Anthony’s.

“No matter what, we have to win it all this year,” said Friars’ DL Chris Minogue after they dominated No. 4 Holy Trinity yesterday in a CHSFL AAA playoff game at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. “All we talk about is winning a championship.”

The top-seeded Friars, who next face the winner of yesterday’s other semifinal between Iona Prep and St. Francis Prep, will play for the title for the third straight year and the fourth time in five years. Trouble is, the Friars (9-1) have lost all of them.

“The past two years have been so hard to deal with, coming so close,” Minogue said. “And this year, we hadn’t been playing as well as we could have. Today, we did.”

The Friars, who had trouble with Holy Trinity (7-3) earlier in the season, but took over in the second quarter. Matt Hahn scored a two-yard TD with 4:56 to go in the half and then Minogue intercepted a pass and returned it to the Titans’ 23. Garvin Pierre ran it in from a yard away, St. Anthony’s went up 14-0 and never looked back.

“That interception really gave us momentum,” said QB Alex Conlon, who passed for 125 yards and had an 84-yard touchdown run. “We got really comfortable after that.”

And it showed. St. Anthony’s used Pierre (14 carries, 83 yards), Hahn and John Fiske to control the running game, but Holy Trinity head coach Tony Mascia was more impressed with the Friars’ defense.

“We thought we would be able to move the ball against them more than we did,” Mascia said. “They’re a great team and they played like it today.”

St. Peter’s 12, Holy Cross 7

Dan Davanzo scored from three yards out with 10:33 to play to give St. Peter’s the lead.

Holy Cross played without star running back, Woody Aime, who was ruled academically ineligible.

With the win, St. Peter’s (9-0) advanced to the CHSFL AA championship game. The Eagles will take on the winner of last night’s other semifinal between top-seeded Stepinac and No. 4 Hayes on Dec. 1.

Carnarsie 34, A. Martin 9

Kendall Wilson ran for 193 yards and scored three touchdowns on 23 carries as the No. 3-seeded Chiefs beat No. 7 August Martin and advanced to the PSAL semifinals against No. 2 Lehman.

QB John Harvey scored two touchdowns and ran for 167 yards.

Sheepshead Bay 34

Campus Magnet 0

The top-seeded Sharks continued their domination of the PSAL, wiping out the upstart 12th-seeded Bulldogs.

Glenroy Watkins rushed for 88 yards, two TDS and added a 90-yard KO return. Adeboyego Ankingba scampered for 110 yards and had an 80-yard punt return. Sheepshead Bay will face No. 4 Wagner next week after the Falcons’ win over Curtis.

Lehman 50, Columbus 6

The ninth-seeded Explorers were no match for No. 2 Lehman. “They’re a well-oiled machine,” Columbus head coach David Diaz said.

Matthew King rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown as John Rogers added 84 yards and two touchdowns.
