INWOOD GOLFERS CAN’T KEEP UP WITH JONES

LOCAL GOLF

They turned back the clock last week at Inwood Country Club, where a group of golfers tried, and failed, to replicate one of the greatest shots in golf history.

The Long Island club, celebrating its 100th anniversary, is where Bobby Jones clinched the 1923 U.S. Open with a heroic two-iron from the rough on the 408-yard, 18th hole. The ball landed six feet from the hole, allowing Jones to beat Bobby Cruickshank in a playoff.

Last week, several Inwood members, dressed in 1920s garb, tried duplicating Jones’ shot, using gutta percha balls and hickory-shafted clubs.

“Stephen Taft was the only one who made it over the creek that guards the green,” reports Inwood member Howard Greene.

Taft’s shot, struck from a spot where a plaque commemorates Jones’ shot, about 190 yards out, failed to make the green, finishing about 50 feet from the cup.

TEE TO GREEN

Paul Dickinson of Montauk Downs, a two-time MGA Public Links champ, shot a 1-under 71 at Long Island National to head a group of seven qualifiers at the Long Island qualifier for the U.S. Open.

Also qualifying for the June 5 USGA sectional qualifer at Century were Michael Laudien of Piping Rock, Jeffrey Fortson of Nissequogue, Ray Floyd Jr. of Deepdale, Michael Caporale of North Hills, Paul Glut of Island Hills and Raymond Ziats III of Tam O’Shanter.

This year’s Open is set for June 14-17 at Southern Hills at Tulsa, Okla.

Thomas Sheridan of Aspetuck Valley carded a 77 for a net score of 67 to edge out Martin Keane of Dyker Beach by two shots at the MGA Senior & Pre-Senior Tournament at Burning Tree CC in Greenwich.

Jack Druga and Bob Bigonette, representing CC of Fairfield, won Met PGA’s Pro-Assistant Championship at Sleepy Hollow.

Wee Burn’s John Karcher shot a 1-under 71 at Rockrimmon to lead a group of 19 qualifiers for the Ike Championship. This year’s Ike will be played June 26-26 at Fairview CC in Greenwich.

Harvey Jaffe and Marc Meltzer of St. Andrew’s, playing on their home course, tied with Blue Hill’s Peter O’Brien and Stephen Veralli for medalist honors at 3-under 68s at the MGA’s Men’s Net Team sectional qualifer. Forty-five teams advanced to the championship, set for July 2 at Brooklake.
