Wife’s Twitter spat adds to Eric Decker’s rough Jets beginning

Jets fans let wide receiver Eric Decker and his country-singer wife Jessie James Decker know they are not in Denver anymore.

Jessie James Decker got into a little Twitter war with Jets fans Thursday after they sarcastically responded to her husband’s question asking why people rooted for the team. He was bombarded with snarky answers, which prompted her to fire back.

“You think he really cares what y’all think haters?” Jessie James Decker tweeted. “He’s laughing his ass alllll the way home…. Life is pretty good here. Can’t complain.”

This led to some angry responses to her, and she deactivated her Twitter account Thursday night. She had 382,000 followers on Twitter.

Welcome to New York.

It all began Wednesday when Decker tweeted the following:

It might not have been the best timing for Decker, considering the Jets’ 1-7 record. Jets fans responded like only Jets fans can, badgering him with sarcastic tweets.

“You’ve got to expect that,” Decker said Thursday. “Obviously, everyone’s entitled to their opinion. I don’t think it’s against the law to try to unite or reach out to fans. When you’re in the position you are, people obviously enjoy winning a lot more than losing. I get that. They still love the team aspect. The more you can be apparent to them, the more you can be personal, I think the more they feel a part of the team.

“For me, that’s the biggest thing, making fans feel like they are important because they are. Obviously, I wish things would be different. I didn’t expect everything to be all happy and gung ho. I knew I was going to get some sarcastic remarks because you’re always going to get it. No matter what the situation is there’s always somebody out there wanting attention and being Mr. Negative.”

Jets coach Rex Ryan, who has spent six years here now, said he understood fans’ frustrations.

“I know our fan base is disappointed to say the least, so are we as a football team and an organization from top to bottom,” Ryan said. “I think it’s pretty much expected that that would have been the response when our record is what it is.”

Things have not gone as planned for Decker in his first season as a Jet. After signing a five-year, $36.5 million contract in March, Decker was expected to give the offense a boost. He has struggled with a hamstring injury since training camp and his numbers are down compared to his last two years in Denver with Peyton Manning.

With the Jets at 1-7 and now a change at quarterback and possibly a change at coach coming after the season, does Decker regret coming to the Jets?

“It would be human nature to say ‘what if?’ but I don’t,” Decker told The Post. “I felt confident in my decision. I still feel everything happens for a reason, has a greater purpose.

I’m in this for the long haul. I understand that eight games in. It’s definitely not a situation I ever imagined or ever wanted. Again, I’ve learned a lot through these hardships and we do have eight games left. We have an opportunity.

“We’ll see what happens. I take it one week at a time, but I never regret any decisions that I make. I go into it wholeheartedly and do it for a purpose and believe that I made the right choices.”

Decker has 31 catches for 363 yards and three touchdowns in seven games this season. He missed one game with a hamstring injury.

“[I’m] just more disappointed in struggling with an injury and being not what I expected from myself,” Decker said. “I’ve been fighting to get back again to as healthy as I can and I feel like I’m kind of turning the corner, getting there. Statistics, you can look at it and say, ‘Yeah, it’s definitely not as great. Maybe it’s not the same as it has been.’ But statistics can be blown up as well.

“The statistic I look at is the win-loss column and, personally, I haven’t done enough. I don’t think we’ve done enough in the locker room to accomplish that feat and get more W’s. But again, we’ve got eight games left and we’ve got a lot to build off.”
